Welcome to the 232nd edition of Mystery Jam Monday! Continuing with our Hall of Fame Series, where we welcome one of our nine, seven-time MJM winners into the MJM recording studio, and let that Emeritus winner select the tracks for this week's competition. For week 6 of this Emeritus Series, we welcome @mcgrupp81, the sixth person forced into mandatory retirement after impressively earning seven victories between November 2012 and November 2015.
To win, be the first person to identify the song and date of each of the three mystery jam clips, and answer what they share in common. Each person gets one attempt per day, with the second “day” starting after the Blog posts the hint -- each answer should contain three songs / dates, along with the commonality between them. No sharing or trading of answers is allowed. A hint will be posted on Tuesday if necessary, with the answer to follow on Wednesday. The winner will receive one MP3 code good for a free download of any show, courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. Good luck, and thanks again to @mcgrupp81 for hosting this sixth week of the MJM Hall of Fame Series.
Hint: "I was asked to provide a hint, and I am only doing so because you guys are such a great, attentive audience."
Hint regarding the 2nd Track: Just as the faithful dog McGrupp likes to keep close to the heal of his master, Colonel Forbin, the song from which the 2nd track was selected is closely associated with and adjacent to another, larger song. It is this leading song, the master if you will, which relates specifically to this week's theme.
Answer: Congratulations to @Schvice, who not only takes down a doozy MJM and earns his seventh victory, but as a result, he is now forced into mandatory retirement, becomeing only the 10th person to join the Hall of Champions Emeritus Club. @Schvice accomplished this feat by correctly identifying the tracks: Wilson from 12/8/92, the Jam after McGrupp from 7/5/98, and AC/DC Bag from 2/14/03, as well as the theme: Gamehendge Songs. Special thanks to this week's Emeritus host, @mcgrupp81 who selected the tracks and theme.
In the last few weeks, we have witnessed the expansion of the Emeritus Club, as victories by @ucpete, @WayIFeel and now @Schvice have increased its membership from seven to ten. Will a new generation of MJM savants materialize, or will the Blog finally improve its dismal win-loss record? Only one way to find out: tune in next Monday for MJM Part 233, as the Emeritus Series continues with our guest host, @yunkfunk.

good luck!
12/8/92 Wilson
7/5/98 Jam (out of McGrupp)
2/14/03 Bag
All Gamehendge songs
Congrats Schvice!
Hey thanks man!
That would have been a fun theme too, but this was a good one. You would think "Gamehendge tunes" would be the easiest and most obvious theme possible, but you made it really tough.
Right off the bat, I was pretty sure I recognized that first clip, but I had no idea what it was. I thought maybe it was a particularly odd Weekapaug, or maybe a Jim. The second and third were even more tricky. I actually thought there were two basses in that second one, so I checked a bunch of shows featuring Oteil, Les, Victor, Chris Wood...nothing. And that last one sounded more like a Jim than a Bag. Pretty sure I wouldn't have gotten that one (or really, any of them) without the hint. Nice work!
Funny that you and I recognized the opposite jams first. The one you knew right away was the one that I had no idea about.
This band, I tell ya...
Congrats to yet another Phish catalog master
Like others have said, these cats competing in this are on another level. I can't hang, and that's okay, but it is a lot of fun to watch and make feeble attempts at the weekly theory.
Time didn't permit this week, but my armchair theory, once the hint was revealed, was that all three clips were (way out) versions of Hydrogen, which is adjacent to Mike's (following the Forbin/McGrupp reference). It also seemed that each clip contained extra, or more than usual, percussion. So I was chasing guest percussionists and looking at the era when Trey had his mini-kit.
Obviously not the right rabbit hole, but kudos to all who keep the MJM alive. Cheers.
As tempting as it is to bask in the idea that I'm some kind of master of the Phish catalog, I'm afraid I just can't accept that mantle. In fact, I'd venture to say I'm much less of a master than most others here.
You don't have to have a deep knowledge of the catalog to win these things, you just have to be willing to spend an afternoon or two blowing off the work you're supposed to be doing and devoting all your time and energy to the chase. It's a dubious honor.
But an honor just the same, so I'll take it!
I'm with @phreephish on the difficulty of the multi-clip format. Luckily I knew two of the four mjm clips last week within minutes of hearing them. I knew the Ha Ha Ha on the first note. Glad I was able to get the other four to gain emeritus status because I didn't see that happening for a long time with the multi-clip format.
In an effort to make the MJM level of difficulty commensurate with the new and vastly improved search tools, devised the multi-track, theme-based MJM. To win with this format, a certain amount of effort is required, because even if you identify a track and then the theme, you still need to work to find all the pieces of the puzzle. He and I think that's okay - you shouldn't win in 10 seconds because you recognize a jam and it's game over like that.
Having said that, Pete and I will monitor the results, especially in light of the fact that a couple of really strong players have just been forced to retire. If the multi-track format is simply too difficult, or if it becomes unpopular, we will shake things up, again. Most importantly, we want people to have fun and to look forward to this little distraction from real life each week. If that's not the case, what's the point? So keep sending us your feedback, because we both pay attention and we want this to be something that people enjoy. And, it would be nice if the Blog could notch a win once in a blue moon.
Thanks everyone.
