Review by TheEmu

TheEmu What a great show to discover this morning! Without further ado, the Phish Band!!

First set features a really nice early Reba with great work from Trey up to a firey ending. I may submit this Reba for the jamming chart after I give it a few more listens, it's pretty darn good for such an early version. The other first set highlight is Fee into a trippy-ass, freakin' awesome David Bowie. I'll also mention that I was amused by the Beatles-eque girl shreiking as Trey started Reba, so I had to laugh out loud when Trey said, after Foam, that he was getting quite the collection of undergarments up on stage. You go, Rock God Trey. Lots of fun banter in this show, too. (YOU need a haircut!)

Set II starts with a really nicely played Divided > Wilson > Dinner & Movie > Stash run. Awesome screaming from Fishman on D&AM. The You Enjoy Myself is pretty sweet as well, and, as is so often the case, I think Trey is jamming on/teasing something that I can't quite place. Oh, well, it's pretty awesome. Vocal jam starts with dogs howling and ends with gorillas taking a dump, with apologies from Fishman.

More shreiking girls when Coil starts, and the Coil piano solo quickly changes to something that I first thought of as Gumbo-esque, but really it's more...HARPUA!!!! And, can I just ask, WTF is Schralping??? Anyway, typically fun Harpua, which is in a really close tie with Reba for my favorite songs (I can't tell you the number of dreams I've had that involve Harpua).

Now, I know some of you out there hate the vacuum solos, so the next time one of you hears one, just remind yourself that it could be much worse: Fishman could be playing fretless guitar. His work in Whipping Post is definitely a nomination for Worst Guitar Solo EVER. It's hysterically awful, like you-gotta-hear-this bad. Gotta love Showboat Gertrude.

So, I'm totally shocked that this was an unrated show!! It's really great, both lots of fun and some great jamming! It was firmly cemented as 4 stars for me by the middle of set II, then they busted out the Harpua (which, amazingly, was the first that I've heard while listening to these 35 or so unrated shows). It's probably still a 4 star show, but I am a total sucker for Harpua, so I'm going 5 stars on this. A great all-around early show, check it out!
