History

The song name may not immediately ring a bell, but the interlocking melodies of "Heart and Soul" so often heard by dueling side-by-side pianists are unmistakable across many generations. This is perhaps the signature song (alongside "Baby, It's Cold Outside") in the prolific career of Broadway songwriter Frank Loesser. The song has been covered by dozens of performers (Dave Brubeck, Ella FitzgeraldMel Tormé) and has appeared in countless movies (American Graffiti, Big, The Godfather II) and televisions shows (Lost, Family Guy, The Simpsons)

On 11/29/95, Phish covered the song “Heart and Soul” with Béla Fleck on banjo. Clocking in at less than a minute, this relaxed and cheerful rendition was coherent and complete, though at the same time little more than a tuning and vamping interlude.
