Anyone who has read the liner notes to Junta knows the story of the “Divided Sky” ritual. In the early 21st century, if you’re reading this and don’t know the origins of the ritual it’s probably because you bought your copy of Junta on iTunes or something and don’t have the liner notes (or you’ve made the dubious moral decision not to pay for music). But in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, when Junta was only available on cassette at Phish shows and by mail order, it’s safe to say plenty of fans didn’t own Junta (and thus didn’t know the story). Luckily for them, Trey took it upon himself to explain the ritual by way of what has become known as the “Rhombus Narration.”
Still don’t know the story? Back in the old days, you had to be lucky enough to be at one of the nine known shows where they played it (we walked uphill though six feet of snow to get to those shows….and we LIKED it!). Today? YouTube!
